In a gaming landscape dominated by big-name releases like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Khazan, it’s easy for smaller indie gems to slip through the cracks. While browsing through YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter a few nights ago, I was bombarded with the same trending titles over and over again—until I stumbled upon something different. A video with just a handful of views and comments caught my eye, thanks to its intriguing thumbnail. The title? Battle Frontier Gameplay Teaser – Capture, Merge & Battle!
Just 14 seconds of gameplay was all it took to spark my curiosity. The footage showed something unexpected—a character transforming and merging with their creature, creating a powerful fusion that looked like a seamless blend of human and monster. The vibrant world and dynamic combat gave me the same excitement I had as a kid, dreaming of my Pokémon games coming to life in full 3D. But this wasn’t Pokémon. It wasn’t Digimon. It was something new, something fresh, and I needed to know more.
I immediately started searching for more details—shorts, tweets, anything that could shed light on this mysterious game. To my surprise, there wasn’t much out there. That only made me more determined. So, I took a shot in the dark and sent a message to the developers on Twitter, hoping for a response. To my delight, just two days later, I found myself in conversation with Seb, the Game Designer of Battle Frontier, developed by the indie studio Skyered.
Seb and his team provided a deep dive into Battle Frontier‘s core mechanics, including its innovative MergeBeasts system, where players fuse with their Battlebeasts for heightened combat abilities. We also explored the game’s inspirations, how it differentiates itself from other creature-collecting titles, and its compelling storyline featuring the shadowy Black Burst Clan. Additionally, we touched on strategic gameplay elements, competitive modes, and the challenges faced during development. Most importantly, we discussed what fans can expect in terms of early access and a possible release date.
Below, you’ll find our exclusive interview with Seb, offering insights into Battle Frontier and what makes it one of the most exciting up-and-coming games in the genre. At least for me.
1. Could you introduce yourselves and describe your roles in developing Battle Frontier?
Hi, nice to meet you. I’m Seb – I hold the position of game designer for project Battle Frontier.
In other words, I have the honor of making sure the Game Director’s vision is brought to life.
2. What inspired the creation of Battle Frontier? Were there specific games, anime, or other media that influenced its concept?
The Game Director loved watching certain anime and games in their youth, which did help spark the project idea – and they still in the DNA of our concepts. As you may have guessed, we wear the inspiration from Dragon Ball and Pokemon on our sleeves.
3. The game features a unique “MergeBeasts” mechanic where players merge with their Battlebeasts. Could you elaborate on how this system functions and its impact on gameplay?
Yes, in the universe of Battle Frontier human characters are naturally rather fragile beings, when compared to BattleBeasts. So certain people like the “Battle Rookies” learned to execute a “Powermerge” with the BattleBeast of choice, to enter a “Mergeform” – A humanoid BattleBeast version.
This combines the human (player’s) Intelligence and reflexes with the stats and powers of the BattleBeast.
The previously autonomous BattleBeast is temporarily gone but the player now has full control and is well armed. They may be able to use new abilities, be more agile or even fly.
This gives them more possibilities not only in combat but also to explore the world.
4. How does Battle Frontier distinguish itself within the creature-collecting genre? What unique features set it apart from similar games?
Battle Frontier distinguishes itself with its combat system: 3D action combat with fighting game elements (blocks, combos, abilities).. And of course, Battle Frontier features a monster companion that’s by your side. You can effortlessly switch between 4 equipped ones – And when things get tough each player is able to execute a Powermerge with their monster companion.
NPC opponents will also have this ability and may try to hinder your progress in fierce encounters.
BattleBeasts can level up and evolve unlike the player character. But that doesn’t mean the player character is helpless either, as they can find and buy helpful equipment that can be upgraded.
Our game takes place in a beautiful Y2K Futurism-inspired world and even features team-based PVP tournaments.
5. The Black Burst Clan is mentioned as a shadowy organization with villainous intentions. Can you provide more insight into their role within the game’s narrative?
The Black Burst Clan is seen as a shady and disruptive organization with a surprisingly great number of members and even greater ambitions. They collect BattleBeasts and seem to have a passion for “territories” and the tagging of those.
Members can be seen hanging out and acting in smaller groups – or even individually – and range from lovable scamps to despicable villains. The Clan itself seems to be divided into three subdivisions, each under different “management”.
6. What multiplayer or competitive elements can players anticipate? Will there be ranked battles or tournaments incorporated into the game?
Ranked battles and tournaments are a major part of the Battle Frontier development plan. Features like this go hand in hand with the game’s lore and setting, which is why they will absolutely be an important core element.
7. How significant is strategic planning in Battle Frontier? Will players need to carefully consider team compositions and battle tactics to succeed?
Yes, ideally players will carefully consider team compositions and battle tactics. In this context, it is also important for players to figure out one’s preferred playstyle: Offensive, defensive and supportive or Middle-ground and technical. Slow or fast. Style of fighting stance. Consider your BattleBeast team’s composition and abilities to succeed.
8. Can you share details about the game’s art style and the process behind designing the Battlebeasts? What influenced their visual and functional design?
Overall, we are going for a Y2K Aesthetic – a combination of utopian futurism and untouched nature – with some hidden ruins of older times added to the mix. We collaborate with a wonderful Japanese character artist that helps us develop the diverse and colorful human characters in a unique art – style. Our BattleBeasts were designed by our talented creature-artist and went through several revisions and polls.
Conceptually they are mainly inspired by lesser-known German fairytale – or mythology creatures. Visually designed to fit into our three “Galactic Element” types : Ego, Soul and Instinct. In other words, dangerous, fun and cute. The Powermerge Forms are obviously based on the BattleBeast designs, and we have the assistance of 3 amazing Japanese artists that bring out their key features and fierceness.
9. What challenges have you encountered during the development of Battle Frontier, and how have you addressed them?
Game development is not without its challenges – and BattleFrontier is no different. We previously went through turbulent phases and straits; I envy anyone who has developed a game without difficulties. Balancing game code and visuals with a limited budget is often an issue. But it is about how one deals with it and moves forward.
10. Is there an anticipated release date for Battle Frontier? Will players have the opportunity to participate in a beta or early access version before the official launch?
We are currently working on a vertical slice for GamesCom in August. A release date is not yet set in stone, as there is still a long way to go and we want to make sure the game comes out as good as possible. A beta test phase is something we are exploring.
